While surgery may have seen a slight decline for men, the popularity on non-surgical treatments, which offer natural results with minimal downtime, is certainly on the up and fuelling the increase in the male aesthetics market. While non-surgical statistics are virtually non-existent in the UK, we often follow trends set in the United States. Recently released stats by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) showed that wrinkle-relaxing injections were the most popular non-surgical treatments with men followed by laser hair removal and acid dermal fillers. There have been suggestions that this rise in the number of professional men seeking treatment has been fuelled by the current economic climate, with men feeling the pressure to turn back the clock so they can compete with their younger counterparts in the workplace. Whatever the reason wrinkle-relaxing injections, such as Botox and Hyperhidrosis, have become increasingly more commonplace for men. From Cliff Richard to David Hassellhoff, support for the treatment in the male community is such that it has recently been christened with its own special name - ‘bro-tox’. Some men though still feel reserved towards injections and prefer other non-invasive solutions, such as Non-Surgical LPG Facelift. Head over to our Muscle-Relaxing page to find out more about our wrinkle-relaxing treatments.
Does Alternative Medicine Work For Hay Fever?
Written by Body Silk ClinicApproximately 15 million people in the UK suffer from hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis). Hay fever is a condition in which the immune system mistakenly identifies pollen as a toxin and attacks it. The immune system releases histamine into the body to block 'a harmful invader'. This leads to inflammation of nose and eyes, itchiness, sneezing and many others unpleasant symptoms. Conventional treatment prescribes strong antihistamines that offer only temporary relief . But there are other effective options that can be used as a cure . Homeopathy and acupuncture have been used for a treatment of allergies for centuries. Not only these methods give significant relief, but they also eliminate the disease all together. Ideally, the treatment should take place about three weeks before the hay fever symptoms reach their peak. If the symptoms have reached that stage, the treatment will ease swelling, itchiness and sneezing. It will make your life more comfortable during even most severe attacks. The complete cure requires a treatment process of over 2-3 years. It means that before your hay fever occurs, you will need to activate your immune system. Homeopathy and acupuncture would work well to give you the necessary resistance. A few sessions of acupuncture will be required during your hay fever attacks. Your doctor will be able to work out your individual treatment plan. More information about hay fever is available on our Facebook Page blog.
UK Women Are Unaware of The Causes of Facial Ageing
Written by Body Silk ClinicMost UK women do not realize the biggest contributor to an ageing face is loss of volume, more so than fine lines and wrinkles.
“Lifting the Lid”, a study carried out on behalf of Allergan Medical Aesthetics, found that only 23% of women surveyed were most concerned about volume loss.
The report examined the awareness among UK consumers of facial volume loss and its causes, to highlight public misconceptions about the causes of an ageing appearance and the most effective treatments to tackle them.
While most women were keen to slow down the effects of ageing, the results indicated that many are unaware of the real underlying causes of facial ageing and which treatments to pursue to counteract them.
Jowls, eye bags and crows' feet were the top three concerns for women in the UK, who worried less about lines and wrinkles near the mouth and eyes.
Only 5% of British women surveyed identified reduction in the fat layer beneath the surface of the face as the main reason for volume loss, while 37% believed that sagging skin was caused by a loss of collagen.
The participants were generally cautious about pursuing more invasive anti-ageing procedures, with 67% admitting to not really understanding how clinically tested injectable treatments work.
On the other hand, most respondents believed that a healthy lifestyle and good diet were the most effective defences against the effects of ageing. Full article can be found on www.professionalbeauty.co.uk
Unwanted hair is often associated with the inconveniences of shaving, waxing, ingrown hairs, increased skin sensitivity and itchiness. Laser Hair Removal technologies had a revolutionary impact on the effectiveness of permanent hair reduction. The aesthetic and beauty industry has been transformed (sadly, not always in a good way) by cheap daily deals offering bargains on various treatments, including laser hair removal. Beware when you see an IPL hair removal course is being sold as 'a laser hair removal' treatment. IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is not a laser. It has nothing to do with a laser. The technologies are totally different due to the type of the beam that these two machines produce.
IPL delivers a scattered beam while a laser produces a focused type of beam (if you ever went to the Greenwich observatory to see the Zero Meridien, you know what we are talking about). When the laser type of beam reaches a follicle, the power of the heat stays the same once the beam is issued, unlike the IPL type of the beam that gets scattered by the time it hits a follicle. This property directly affects the quality and the timing of the results of your treatment.
For comparison, 10-12 sessions of IPL are required to see any difference in hair reduction. With the right laser, you may need as little as 4 sessions to get rid of your unwanted hairs permanently. A laser is, therefore, much more powerful. Having said that, not all laser machines do the same job. That is why, it is worth while doing a little bit of research before investing in your laser haireremoval treatment.
Each type of laser has a certain wave length designed to effectively perform a certain type of procedure. That is why a good clinic when offering various types of laser treatments, such as laser skin resurfacing, laser hair removal, laser thread vein removal, etc, should have different laser machines for each of those procedures. In theory each laser can do all of the above treatments, BUT with a different level of effectiveness.
What can happen? If a laser is not specifically designed to kill a follicle for the first time, the follicle will keep producing hair, sometimes even more actively than before. This can happen because the blood supply will not be cut off from the follicle, and with extra heat from the laser, it can stimulate the hair growth. You may even end up struggling to remove your hairs later with the right laser as the melanin in the hair can fade after your numerous treatments previously. The follicle will become invisible for the laser "to see" the hair in the follicle as a laser targets hair through the dark melanin contained in it.

The beauty of using the Obagi Nu-Derm system is that it does not only rejuvenate but also reverses everything in your skin that is wrong. It is not just a visible effect. The skin changes inside on all its levels: epidermis, dermis and subcoteneous. If, for instance, you suffer from pigmentation, it is going to regulate the melanosyte production on the melanyn membrane between your epidermis and dermis so that your skin tone becomes even without spots of unwanted pigmentation. Pigmentation marks appearing on skin’s surface are usually due to excessive hormonal activity or excessive sun exposure, be it sunbeds or sunshine. Obagi Nu-Derm does not distinguish between the reasons for your pigmentation - it will fix it whatever the source of your pigmentation is. Your doctor may opt to prescribe you Obagi pigmentation treatment in case this is your only concern and you do not bothered about the rejuvenation. It will be the Obagi CRx version with hydroquinone and Vitamin C. Hydroquinone in both Obagi Nu-Derm and Obagi Obagi CRx will do the job related to the pigmentation problem and Obagi Sunshield SPF50 will 100% protect your skin from the new UV exposure. Obagi Sunshield SPF50 will also protect the skin against premature ageing, which starts to become more apparent to women aged 26 onwards. Vitamin C adds extra protection by being a powerful anti-oxidant. Please, refer to our earlier publication about the benefits of Vitamin C for more details. Why Is Vitamin A Called The "Ingredient Of Youth"?
Written by Body Silk ClinicImagine there was a super- ingredient that could dramatically improve the skin’s texture, control pigmentation, minimise wrinkles and even protect against cancer. In an industry surrounded by hype, it can be hard to know what to believe. Yet this clinically proven ingredient does exist, and there is a wealth of research to back up the claims. It is simply vitamin A, which is an essential ingredient of the Obagi Nu-Derm Sysytem. The beauty industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of this powerful nutrient. It has normalizing effect on DNS, which results is healthier cells. The skin becomes firmer and smoother because there are more moisturizing factors which plump it out. It also plays an important role in increasing collagen production and reducing uneven skin tone. However, if you are only applying it topically you are only doing half of the job. That is why, Obagi Nu-Derm has a 'deliverer' in its formula to get precious Vitamin A deep into the dermis. Once Vitamin A is there, an interesting process kicks in. It wakes up fibroblasts - the cells responsible for the production of two ingredients of 'youth' in our skin: collagen and hyaluronic acid. Collagen creates volume and hyaluronic acid moisturises the tissue from the inside. As a matter of fact, fibroblasts 'fall asleep' approximatelly at the age of 26. Vitamin A, if delivered in the dermis, makes fibroblasts work again and your skin starts delivering collagen and hyaluronic acid to the skin surface. The rejuvenation process begins! What Are Free Radicals And How They Affect The Skin?

Free radicals are everywhere and cause constant attacks within the skin; pollution, poor diet, stress, medication, central heating, air conditioning, alcohol, sun and smoking are all examples of free radical damage. Obagi Nu-Derm London together with the Obagi Professional Vitamin C Serum are a powerful way to fight free radicals and to reverse the existing signs of aging and skin damage. Obagi Nu-Derm contains a formula that delivers the active ingredients all way down into the dermis. What are Stages of Cellulite and How To Fight It?
Written by Body Silk ClinicCellulite has stages. With summer approaching and the hopes of lying on a hot sunny beach, people will be hoping for a toned, trim body. Advances in technology and product development now mean there are the whole host of treatments you can choose from, such as vibration plates, relaxing body wraps, non-invasive inch loss, body sculpting and firming combined with products for cellulite and slimming. The key areas that people feel less confident about tend to be the legs and the abdomen. Cellulite reduction is a common concern for the legs area. What many consumers are not aware of is that there are three stages of cellulite. At stage one there are no visible signs of cellulite when standing or lying down but after pinching there is a sponge-like appearance. At stage two, when standing and lying down dimpling appears spontaneously and at stage three, dimpling is spontaneously positive when standing or lying down. Cellulite is encouraged by draining enzymes, called MMP's (Matrix Mettalloprotinase), such as Collangenase and Elastinase. They tear down the scaffolding on which the skin sits and create a dimpled or 'orange peel' appearance. You might be pleased and relieved to know that cellulite has nothing to do with being fat. And compared with men, due to the hormone cycle, women release a greater ampunt of these distructive enzymes. Some people prefer to combat cellulite through professional cellulite and slimming products. Thermo Contour Complex from the Dr Belter Samtea Body and Balance range, for example, uses a self-heating action which gives warming sensation to absorb active ingredients. These ingredients break down compound fats and lipids in the area giving a visible slimming and anti-cellulite action. This product goes well with non-invasive fat and cellulite reduction by Endermologie and Lipomassage, giving incredible results just after a few sessions in terms of slimming, contouring and lymphatic drainage.

The skin is like a map and can show you what is happening internally within your body. For example, if breakouts are noticed along the jaw line, this can be an indication of stress. Breakouts on the cheaks usually refer to digestion problems - whether it's intolerance to a certain food or a change in diet. Acne on the forehead can mean that a person is not drinking enough water. Breakouts on the chin area are usually in relation to hormonal changes within the body. When it comes to treatments and products, there are so many available it can be difficult to know which ones to use. One shall be aware that professional products and treatments will always give a better result as the formulation and ingredients used are more advanced and the activity levels are higher too, giving a better result in the skin: professionally developed products and treatments have had the research and time spent to ensure the best results are achieved. Occasional breakouts can effectively be kept under control by specifically developed Line A products from the 'Dr Belter' professional cosmetic range. It is also recommended to have a sebum control facial with extraction once a month to make sure that the pores are unblocked and the skin "breaths" without the sebum accumulating and causing the bacteria to multiply resulting in acne. There are two other ways of boosting the ability of the skin to regulate the sebum, to minimise the pores and to prevent breakouts - superficial peels: one is mechanical, such as Microdermabrasion, which you can take on an advanced level by having a course of those performed with 10 days gap between the sessions followed by home care products from Crystal Clear range; and the other one is chemical, such as Obagi Blue Peel Radiance based on salisylic acid, which can be done as a one-off treatment or, if necessary, repeated with 3 weeks intervals. Persistent breakouts, especially for the younger patients, can be treated with a non-prescriptive medication, such as Obagi CLENZIderm system. In more severe cases, a more aggressive approach can be applied with the prescriptive medication, such as Obagi Nu-Derm system, which would require a consultation with a specialist. What Else Did You Not Know About Wrinkle-Relaxing Injections?
Written by Body Silk ClinicMuscle Relaxing Treatments As They Are Muscle Relaxing Treatments are often associated with botox - a protein complex that is produced by Clostridium botolinum, which is the same bacterium that causes food poisoning. This is the very reason why botox information is necessary for all those who would want to undergo the procedure. When used in medical settings and in small doses, botox injections block acetylcholine, a chemical that signals muscle contraction. This interference on certain muscles results in smoothed out, fine lines and wrinkle reduction. Thus, you automatically look more radiant and fresh. However, Botox injections are not only used for wrinkle reduction, but also have a variety of other uses. Since the botulinum toxin also suppresses nerve activity that leads to sweating, this is also an effective treatment for excessive sweating of underarms, pulms and feet, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. This type of treatment has become popularly known as sweatox. Botox injections are also used to treat painful muscular spastic disorders such as myofascial pain syndrome and cervical dystonia. They are also effective in treating blepharospasm, a chronic condition that involves recurrent spastic tics of the eyelids. Lastly, there appears to be a rising trend in using Botox for migraines and other types of headaches, but this would often entail weekly injections for sustained effects. The efficacy of Botox injections, as well as the occurrence of adverse events, will depend on the expertise of the persons administering the injections. When choosing to undergo Botox therapy, do not rely on the Botox price but rather, ensure that the establishments performing these procedures have an excellent reputation and proficient, qualified cosmetic doctors.
"Pampers with Champers" article originally from Delicious Magazine Friday, 16 July, 2010 Supping bubbly is an opulent way to relax, but the Body Silk Aesthetic Clinic goes one step further and adds it to a luxurious Champagne facial, discovers Debra Waters. pamper with champers at body silk london Champers is drunk by the gallon in the historically decadent City and now a basement spa at Monument is adding it to beauty treatments – but for good reason. After relaxing with a glass of champagne (or grape juice if you don’t fancy the hard stuff) Magda, my friendly therapist, explains how it works. The clinic uses Dr Belter – a little-known company in the UK although well established in its native Germany. Products are 95-100% natural and include ingredients such as sea algae. Now for the science bit: OPCs are plant-based bioflavonoid complexes that act as foragers in the body mopping up free radicals that damage skin. The antioxidant properties in grape seeds have been shown to offer benefits including an improvement to skin health. I need to lie down after that explanation and stretch out half-expecting a standard, booze-soaked treatment, but the one-and-a-half hour session turns out to be much more than just a facial. After a 10 minute back massage, Magda removes my make-up and gives a mini micro dermabrasion to smooth skin, reduce facial discolouration and help the cream penetrate more deeply. Alcohol is dehydrating but only a dash of real Champagne is mixed in with the OPC ampoule, the content of which is activated by the bubbles. Only decent Brut champagne works: sweet, Cava or Prosecco won’t do. champagne facial at body silk clinic london Once my face is swathed in a velvety unguent I’m given a spine-tingling head and shoulder massage, then the remaining cream is gently applied using a special fan brush massage technique followed by a heavenly face massage. This is undoubtedly the most relaxing facial I’ve had. It’s sumptuous, soothing and indulgent and made my skin glow. Good for all skin types, the treatment works to protect connective tissue, enhance blood flow and improve the nutrient supply to the skin. Even though you can smell the alcohol it’s not unpleasant and the fragranced lotion ensures that you don’t reek like you’ve spent the night in a pub lock-in. It’s also very reasonably priced considering you get a facial, head, back and face massage and a glass of champers. There’s also a caviar facial that uses the real thing, which is good for capillaries as well as protecting against pollution. Either would make a lovely gift to yourself, for a friend, or (listen up, gentlemen) a perfect present for your other half. The Champagne facial costs £85 for 75 minutes.
Our skin is daily exposed to various damaging elements, including UVA and UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate the connective tissue beneath the skin and damage elastin fibers, collagen fibers, cause skin pigmentation and wrinkling, as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. UVB rays cause tanning, sunburns and skin cancer. Studies have shown that exposure to the sun is one of the main causes of premature aging of the skin and changes to its condition and suppleness. In the past few years an increasing number of academic research studies have been done to check and understand the sunscreen’s effectiveness not only in preventing sun burns and skin redness but also in regards to premature aging of the skin and skin cancers. A recent research, the world-first human study to assess the impact of sunscreen at the molecular level, has shown that sunscreen creams help protect the p53 gene that is responsible for protecting our skin from cancer. Do you use sunblock products? If so, which ones and how often?
