What Is Botox?

Botox wrinkle-relaxing treatments are often associated with Botulinum Toxin (BT) – a biological product that relaxes the muscle and stops its contraction on a temporal basis. As a result, the relaxed muscle does not form wrinkles (as shown in the picture below: before the botox injection and two weeks after).

Botox is a prescribed medication and can be performed by a registered doctor or a registered nurse.

At Body Silk Clinic, Botox is administered by dedicated botox doctors who specialise in facial aesthetics.

When is Botulinum Toxin used in aesthetic medicine?

Botox is most frequently used in the treatment of lines and wrinkles of the upper part of the face such as frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, brow lift. It is also effective for the treatment of the lines around the mouth, lift of the nose tip, the neck area and to decrease the appearance of the lines on the décolleté. Some patients may consider botox for treatment of migraines and even teeth grinding. Botox also is effective for the treatment of hyperhidrosis – excessive sweating. This treatment has a commercial name and is called sweatox.

How is botox administered at our London clinic?

Botox treatments require the patients to have a consultation with one of our doctors and can be adminstered right after the consultation if the patients have no contraindications. Botox is injected with a very fine needle in very small doses into the areas of concern. The treatment sessions last 15-30 minutes.

Botox treatment of the face, neck and décolleté as well as armpits is practically painless, although the patients often opt to have anasthetic anyway. The treatment of palms and soles always requires a local anesthetic.

Patients should be aware of the possibility of injection-related immediate effects after botox, such as bruising.

How long does Botox last?

The muscle activity is blocked for 3-6 months and muscle mobility will recuperate gradually. The doctor will have to see the patient for a follow-up appointment in two weeks to see if a further top-up is needed. A top-up treatment if required and if performed in two weeks time, is free in our clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are wrinkle-relaxing treatments?

Created with Pixso.
Wrinkle-relaxing treatments, such as botulinum toxin injections, are designed to smooth out wrinkles and lines on the face. They work by blocking nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, which helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

2. What results can be expected after the treatment?

Created with Pixso.
After the treatment, you can expect to see a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and lines, especially in the forehead, around the eyes, and between the brows. Results typically become visible within a few days and can last from three to six months.

3. How long does the procedure take, and is there any recovery time?

Created with Pixso.
The procedure usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes and requires little to no recovery time. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after the treatment, though it's recommended to avoid intense physical activity for a few hours.

4. Are there any side effects?

Created with Pixso.
Potential side effects may include temporary bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection sites. In rare cases, headaches or more serious reactions might occur. It’s important to discuss all risks with your doctor before the procedure.

5. How often should treatments be repeated to maintain results?

Created with Pixso.
To maintain results, treatments are generally recommended every three to six months, depending on individual factors and how quickly the body metabolizes the product.

6. What precautions should be taken before and after the procedure?

Created with Pixso.
Before the procedure, it's advisable to avoid medications that can increase bleeding risk, such as aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs. After the procedure, follow your doctor's instructions to minimize the risk of side effects and achieve the best results.
