Did you know that cute freckles that some people get are called sometime ‘sun kisses’? Unfortunately, the truth is as simple as that – they are actually the result of a sun damage. You may have noticed that especially after the summer or a sunny beach holiday, some people experience more of those brown discolourations on their tanned skin. In medical terms, it is called pigmentation – a result of excessive melanin levels in the body due to the sun exposure. Special cells in our skin, called melanocytes, produce melanin. If the skin is exposed to the sun and is not protected, the cells become damaged or simply unhealthy which triggers a change in melanin production. These unhealthy damaged cells alter the skin colour. However there may be other reasons for pigmentation, such as hormonal imbalance. Pigmentation can affect both white and dark skin types and needs a different approach. Feel free to ask questions from our skin specialists!.
